The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) announced today that Ms Audrey Zibelman will be appointed as AEMO’s new Chief Executive Officer.
Ms Zibelman joins AEMO from previous roles as Commissioner and Chair of the New York State Public Service Commission (NYPSC). As Chair, Ms Zibelman oversaw the regulation of electricity, gas, telephone, internet and water utilities across New York.
In her role with the NYPSC role, Ms Zibelman held responsibility for the design and implementation of reforms to the New York electricity industry under the State’s ‘Reforming the Energy Vision’ plan.
Previous experience also includes senior roles with grid and wholesale market operators. Ms Zibelman served as Chief Operating Officer of PJM Interconnector, responsible for the operation of the grid and wholesale market across more than a dozen states on the East cost of the United States.
Chair of the AEMO Board, Dr Tony Marxsen, welcomed the appointment of Ms Zibelman, highlighting the depth of experience brought to the role, placing AEMO in a strong position to continue working in a transforming industry.
“Audrey’s vast experience in creating and managing new wholesale electricity markets, and transforming existing energy markets and large power systems will further strengthen the work that AEMO has undertaken to support Australia’s energy industry transformation,” Dr Marxsen said.
Ms Zibelman was also a Founder CEO of Viridity Energy, Inc, which develops software solutions for the optimization of load and distribution generation profiles to reduce costs without impacting on production within industrial or commercial applications.
Ms Zibelman fills the vacancy temporarily filled by Ms Karen Karen Olesnicky as Acting CEO with the appointment to CEO of AEMO commencing 20 March 2017.
